The Importance of Artificial Turf System Terminology: Non-Infill Artificial Turf Systems

With the upcoming ban on microplastic infills in Europe, a great deal of research is underway into alternative artificial turf systems. We firmly believe that these innovative technologies will continue to provide high-quality turf surfaces for a wide range of applications and in a variety of climate conditions.

These options include non-infill systems, natural infill systems, and mineral infill systems.

One area of confusion in the market today is the definition of non-infill systems. FIFA and other sports federations have clarified that “non-infill” refers to the absence of infill. This is a strange clarification, as it is obvious that if infill material is put into a turf product, it is no longer non-infill.

As can be seen in the accompanying figure, the mass breakdown of true non-infill systems and mineral infill systems differs significantly. Many mineral infill systems have a 1:10 ratio of yarn to sand (i.e. 10 kg of sand for every 1 kg of yarn).

Unfortunately, in some regions, mineral infill systems are often labeled as non-infill, which can cause confusion for customers. Mineral infill systems have their place in the market. They are an inexpensive, entry-level system that is suitable for a variety of sports applications. But they are not “non-infill” products.
